About the artist

Calypso is a queer, neurodivergent multidisciplinary artist from Berea, KY. Raised by Armenian Appalachians, art was always a necessity in the home. Creating art served as a way to preserve their own culture, thus viewing art became a way of understanding others in return. If art was the language, then medium was the dialect, subject matter the dialogue, lighting and color the tone and tenor of a larger conversation. Calypso was captivated by visual arts, at just three years old attempting to steal Claude Monet’s 1906 “Water Lilies” from the wall of the Art Institute of Chicago. Failing to pull off the heist, they instead settled for a print from the museum gift shop, beginning a lifelong journey of studying and collecting art in a myriad of genres and mediums. Passive Interest became proactive curiosity, an essential need to learn how the artwork was made, leading to a depth of understanding of both process and practice. Their current skills include creating linocuts, stencils, watercolors, acrylics, welded sculpture, jewelry, monoprints, crochet, working in charcoal, and more.
